What is PESS?

PE and School Sport (PESS)is the combination of planned, progressive learning that takes place during schoolcurriculum time, which is delivered to all pupils throughout the UK and many other countries which is Physical Education. This involves learning to move which teaches pupils to be physically competent and also moving to learn which is when pupils learn skills through movements. School sport is more about structured learning that takes place outside of the curriculum but within a school setting e.g. extra-curricular. School sport can help to develop and broaden the foundation learning that has taken place in Physical Education.
Throughout the world, different countries implement PESS differently in schools. Two countries that have many differences and similarities in how PESS is implemented are the UK and the USA. The main issue with how these countries differ in their implementation of PES is how they view the subject. Because PESS is a micture of Physical Education and School Sport, it can be delivered in a bias towards one part of it rather than being equally balanced. Therefore, one country sees PESS as a way to improve childrens skills and all round well being, and one focuses on sport and competing to be the best. This website will give overviews of how PESS is implemented in the curriculums of these countries and also how it is different in both countries as well.
